Eric sat in the aircraft, his sweaty hands gripping the seat rests, his breathing accelerating and his whole being dreading the rest of the flight. As turbulence hit the airplane he had a panic attack. It was not his first one - flying phobia had been his companion for many years. Yet this time, Eric Goodman, a clinical psychologist specialized in treating anxiety disorders, decided to follow his own advice.

He stopped leaning into the tempting suggestions given by his anxious mind and did exactly the opposite, eventually overcoming his flying phobia. He let go of controlling or avoiding the feeling, and let it be.

Anxiety has been a survival mechanism for humans throughout history, yet modern society has seen a rise in anxiety about experiencing anxiety itself.

In this highly interesting conversation, Eric Goodman, Ph.D lecturer at Calpol State University, will shed much light on what anxiety really is and on why only two types of people never have anxiety: psychopaths and dead people.

In the end we hope you will agree that demonizing anxiety cause more problems than it solves, and with self compassion coupled with exposure therapy we can minimize it and live a normal life.
